The Agricultural Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA­) is a small, dynamic organization that offers you the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills.

We are seeking a Communications Coordinator to provide support in developing and executing a full range of communication services. In this role you will develop, implement, monitor, and continuously improve ARECA’s Communications. You are a strong advocate for ARECA and you will support the organization on communications, media relations, and brand management. The Communications Coordinator generates ideas and inventive ways to promote our programs while acting as a champion and advocate for positive change in the agricultural community. Your role is responsible for the planning, management, design/creation and delivery of communications initiatives including website content, key presentations, conventional, digital, and social media. Applying your exceptional expertise in communications your work will have a large impact on the success of ARECA and its programs.

This position is responsible for the following:

  • Managing, implementing, and improving strategic communications that includes key messages, audience priorities, communications objectives, brand tone and persona, and channel engagement plans

  • Plan and manage the design, content, and production of marketing materials

  • Support the development, editing and distribution of communication to a variety of stakeholders, including social media, internal and external email newsletters, blog posts and reports

  • Support and maintain ARECA and EFP websites

  • Coordinating monthly reporting meetings and writing quarterly reports

  • Oversee media relations activities to enhance ARECA’s recognition and credibility, including media releases and advisories, tracking media requests and tracking and growing positive media coverage

  • Assist in the development of funding proposals, campaigns, and other media that support the goals of the ARECA and its programs

  • Developing outreach, media and partnership strategies for ARECA’s events

  • Preparing and managing some social media content and procurement of promotional items

A successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience in communications, marketing, extension and public relations

  • Post-secondary education in a related field

  • Knowledge of Alberta’s agricultural sector

  • Proven excellence in writing, editing and verbal communications

  • Exceptional organizational and coordination skills with keen attention to detail

  • Experience in email marketing and client relationship management software (CRM)

  • Familiarity with communications tools we use, including: Website software, Google Analytics, Microsoft Office/G Suite, MailChimp, social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube), design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva, and Zoom.

  • Previous experience coordinating the writing, designing and printing of publications

  • Proven track record in media relations

  • Ability to write, design and develop engaging content for traditional and social media

  • Strong planning, judgment and decision-making skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a dynamic, flexible setting

  • Demonstrated experience and passion for communicating agricultural and environmental issues/content is an asset

  • Experience with non-profit communications including writing grant proposals and reports is an asset

  • Experience planning and organizing events and/or workshop is an asset

You will directly report to the Executive Director and you will frequently collaborate with the rest of the team at ARECA as you generate impactful and compelling content. This position is available province-wide in Alberta or Saskatchewan and requires remote work.


This is a part-time, 25-30+ hours/per week depending on need and workload. This position will run until March 2023, with the possibility of extension.

Salary: $25-35 /per hour. Benefits and vacation time provided.
